We are organizing a parenting "club" that will start in January 2012. We will be discussing the parenting program
developed by Brigham Young University’s School of Education called You Can Do This.
The plan right now is to meet weekly. The first week, we will discuss the Overview video from the You Can Do This website, and discuss goals that we have for parenting in our own families, concerns we might have, and places that we may have looked in the past for help.
The first half hour of each meeting will be reserved for discussing how we did with the previous topic. The second half hour of the meeting will be used to briefly go over the next topic together. Because the meetings will be short (probably only one hour) we will not have time to read through each topic, so the parents should read through the lessons after the meetings to get a better understanding of the topic. During the week between meetings, we should be trying to apply the principle in our own families. Participants are invited to keep notes (a blog for the group will be provided) about their successes and challenges during the week.
Those who are unable to participate in person will be able
to participate via a Google+ Hangout that will link them to the group meeting
via the internet. Those interested in participating in a strictly off-line way are welcome to participate via the comment section on this blog, as well as by posting.
There will be no cost, and all the materials will be found
online at http://education.byu.edu/youcandothis
You are welcome to attend as many or as few of the meetings
as you wish, although you are encouraged to read the program even if you can’t
attend a meeting, and you are encouraged to attend a meeting, even if you didn't read the message. There is strength in knowing that we are not alone as
parents, and that others face the same struggles we face.
We have broken the program up into two main sessions that will be 15 weeks each, and four age group sessions that are four weeks each.
Session 1 will be 15 weeks long and will cover Creating a
More Nurturing Family, Relationship Fundamentals, and Discipline vs Punishment
Session 2 will be 15 weeks long and will cover Today’s
Challenges, Tools for Families, and Safety.
Age Group Sessions are Early Years (0-4), Elementary
Years (5-9), Teen Years (10-14), Toward Independence (15+). Each session will
be 4 weeks long (with the exception of Teen Years which will be only 3 weeks).
